the story

Snowhome is now in its 17th year, our shop can be found in the historic city of York in Northern England.

The shop was opened on a tiny budget in an equally tiny shop. The initial shop-fit was made entirely from breeze blocks and scaffolding planks the total cost was less than £200. We call ourselves a design store because we’re not a gift shop or a furniture store – although we do sell gifts and some furniture! The intention was to set up a shop selling design-led products including inventive gifts, home accessories and a small range of furniture and lighting. The result was an eclectic mix of products, many of which were unavailable elsewhere in the North of England at that time.

Thankfully things worked out and the feedback and sales were extremely encouraging. This allowed an interior upgrade after year one (out went the breeze blocks). I was outgrowing the little shop and moved to a shop three times the size in the summer of 2003 located at 42 Gillygate only two doors away so the move was done by hand. We’ve remained at No. 42 for the past 15 years and the business has adapted and changed during that time. We will continue to evolve whilst staying true to our core values; creative design, interesting perspectives, integrity and a sense of fun. We source our stock from smaller manufacturers, emerging designers and carefully handpicked items that meet our criteria. Our belief is that a smaller business has the potential to offer more than a big powerful one. We aim to succeed by offering a range of products, customer care and attention to detail that is now hard to find on the high street.

Snowhome has attracted some wonderful and loyal customers along the way as well as some great staff members, many of whom are now close friends. Thank you.

  • In August 2001 snowhome opened at 38 Gillygate.
  • In 2002 Angus met David, and he helped us out with a nice birch ply shop fit.
  • Here's the exterior of 38 Gillygate back in 2002 after our new ply shop fit.
  • In 2003 we relocated to 42-44 Gillygate, a shop double the size of 38.
  • In 2007 we went swanky and this was our lighting showroom.
  • In 2011 Pip the shop dog was born. She just loves the Robin Day Club sofa.
