Collection: Coaltown
Coaltown's ethos is to create delicious coffee and do good along with it.
In 2019, Coaltown became one of the first b-Corp certified coffee companies in the UK, which means they are morally and legally committed to prioritising responsibility to the environment and society, from the experts who produce their coffee at the roastery to the baristas who brew it. They have met the highest standards of environmental and social practices, and are now committed to upholding and furthering these. Certified B Corporations, in the simplest of terms, are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
Coaltown plan to promote specialty coffee as a means of providing industry and community to post industrial mining towns.
Supply chain
Coaltown prefer to deconstruct traditional supply chains and develop direct trade value chains. They are able to forge strong relationships with producers across the globe. This helps develop transparency to ensure that every party involved can provide value and share equity.
Third wave coffee culture is all about quality and traceability; direct trade relationships make it easier to connect consumers with producers. Intimate logistics help reduce the complexity and middle men associated with traditional supply chains, delivering better value to customers. Mutual trust & respect are the vital components that underpin their sourcing programme.
Coaltown pride themselves on investing in direct trade coffee deals to support minority and more remote growers. The best coffee in the world grows in some of the most remote regions to access. The ideal microclimate, altitude, soil and surrounding vegetation is not easy to come by or maintain for the varieties of coffee we love to drink. Coaltown feel it's important that these locations and the people looking after them are treated with the respect they deserve.
Coffee
Coaltown coffee is roasted daily in their roastery based in the Welsh town of Ammanford, using a Probat GG75 Roaster and a 12kg Probat Roaster.
Roasting coffee requires a careful and methodical approach; monitoring time, temperature, smell and colour change. They aim to develop the natural make-up of each coffee to help create the best possible cup.
The alchemy of roasting coffee is both a science and an art. The more care and attention given to each step, the more rewarding the final brew becomes.
Sustainability
By focussing on ethical sourcing and sustainable production, they work together with industry leaders to develop new and innovative green practices that benefit not just the consumer, but the coffee industry as a whole.
Coaltown use compostable coffee bags made by Biotre and exclusively use compostable coffee cups in all sites, made by a fellow B corp: Decent packaging. All waste coffee chaff & grounds get donated to local gardening groups for composting. They also educate wholesale clients to encourage planet friendly procedures. The Roastery is run on 100% renewable energy working with opus energy – the first UK energy supplier pledging to be carbon negative in the next 10 years.
Coaltown has always been focused on accountability and transparency throughout their supply chains. They seek the most advantageous procurement route for the life and sustainability of all projects and are committed to reducing their direct impact on the environment.
People
Coaltown champion workplace equality and best practice measures and have policies that provide extra resources for staff to support their mental & physical health. Their employment policies provide jobs in the local area and actively encourage people to join a new industry of 5th wave coffee. Their charity work encompasses the local area as well as the UK as a whole.
